Stallo downtime Wednesday June 20th 21:00 - Thursday June 21st 10:00, installation of new file system.

by Steinar Trædal-Henden last modified Jun 19, 2012 02:13 PM

Stallo will be unavailable at Wednesday June 20th 21:00 - Thursday June 21st 10:00 due to installation of a new file sysem.

On Wednesday June 20th at 21:00, stallo will be shut down for service. All running jobs will be stopped! Restartable jobs will be started again by the system, and need no concern. Non-restartable jobs has to be restared by the user. We apologize for this inconvenience.

The reason for the downtime is to finalize the installation of the new file system of stallo.

We estimate to have the system up and running again at Thursday June 21st 10:00.

HOME:

The home area is meant for source code, binaries, libraries and applications with small size and I/O demands.

During the downtime all data on /home/ will be move to the new home disk, so when you login again you should not see any difference than before. the size of the new home is no bigger than the old. the old home will be available at: /global/old_home/$USER

WORK:

A global area for temporary data, i.e., shared storage space for all compute and log-in nodes. Each user has by default a directory (of the form /global/work/$USER) for temporary data, where only the user can write to. This way, no files can be manipulated by other users. It is meant for temporary storage for applications with large file file size and I/O demands. If the application is able to handle really large files, then $WORK is the area to place them. All I/O done during run-time should be done to/from $WORK

The files on /global/work/ will NOT be moved from the old file system to the new. If you need data on the old work you have to copy them yourself! the size of the new /global/work/ is 1PB. the old work will be available at: /global/old_work/$USER

PROJECT:

A project can request to have a storage area that can be accessed by all users connected to the project. Such area is only established upon request by the project responsible. The project itself is responsible for setting up rules who has write access and who is responsible for the contents of the project area. The contact person for Notur is normally the project responsible, unless stated otherwise.

Larger data sets consists most likely temporary data or permanent data that must be kept beyond the life time of the resource (and thus should not reside) on the system. In case a project wants a larger project area on a Notur system or project areas on multiple systems, the default location of the project area will be on a NorStore resource (not Notur). Project area is not intended to be additional storage space for individual users.

The total available size of the project area for all users, will be close to 500TB.

The old home and work will be available until August 15th 2012.
